Zoom SEO Keyword Research Training Course

Module SEO1

SEO Keyword Research

Our SEO Keyword Research online course explores the world of SEO keywords and key phrases, with the specific goal of uncovering those specific phrases that most closely represent your business and it's products and services.

After years of using the internet, you may have gained the impression that 'keywords are king'. Well, that's not strictly true. Keywords (i.e. single words, like photography or football) usually fall into the 'fat head' category (yes, that's a real term) meaning that they are searched on so often, and they are so popular, that the chances of your website appearing in a search of those words is very slim indeed. In other words (and perhaps contrary to popular opinion) there's actually no point in optimising your website for any keywords at all.

Instead, it's the 'chunky-middle' and 'long-tail' (yes, also real terms) key phrases that you want to be looking for. Those short strings of words that accurately describe what you are promoting, marketing or selling. You are much more likely to appear in search results for these types of key phrases, as there is less competition. This is one of the golden rules of SEO.

But how do you find out what key phrases you should be using? Luckily, there are a number of online tools you can utilise during your process of 'key phrase discovery'. During this course module, we examine and demonstrate a number of these tools, which include:

  • Google Search - As you enter a search into Google, Google begins to offer you suggestions. These can be very pertinent to your choice of SEO keyword research phrases. We show you how to choose.
  • Google Related searches - The links at the bottom of Google's search indicate popular searches which relate to the search you placed. Again, we discuss the most appropriate for your business.
  • Google Ads - Keyword Planner - If you have a Google Ads account running in expert mode, you can use their Keyword Explorer tool to get some superb data for your SEO key phrases.
  • Moz Keyword Research Tool - A great keyword and key phrase research tool from those gurus of SEO at Moz (an account is required for 10 free queries a month).
  • Semrush Keyword Research - A very powerful tool from the well respected SEO company (account required for trial, followed by pricing plans).
  • ahrefs Keyword Explorer - Another useful SEO keyword research and key phrase discovery tool (account required for trial, followed by pricing plans).
  • Google Trends - a great (and free) tool for following and predicting trends.

In addition to using some of the above online services, there are also a number of browser plugins that can be very useful for SEO Keyword Research:

Google Chrome Extensions / Firefox Extensions & Add-ons

  • SeoQuake SEO extension by SeoQuake Team - Semrush are giants in the world of SEO, and their SeoQuake extension offers a wealth of instant data on your own and your competitors website SEO. The extension is free, and available for both Google Chrome and Firefox.
  • Detailed SEO Extension by detailed.com - A general SEO keyword research tool showing you page titles, heading tags, inbound and outbound links and descriptions of the currently active website you are viewing (free).
  • Keyword Surfer by surferseo.com - A clever little Chrome extension that displays similar key phrases to the one you searched for in Google, along with search volume and estimated traffic volumes (free).
  • Ubersuggest - SEO and Keyword Discovery by Ubersuggest - Similar to Keyword Surfer above, this extension also shows you the average CPC (cost per click) of your keyphrases i.e. what you would need to be paying to get your ad appearing on Google ads (limited searches).

There are many more Google Chrome and Firefox extensions available, both for SEO analysis and general marketing purposes as well. Visit Chrome Web Store and Firefox Browser Add-ons to discover more.
